Strengthening communities


What we do

The LGF has always worked in partnership with other organisations to deliver its services. It continues to have good working relationships with organisations which deliver complementary services and which commission or support the delivery of services to LGB&T people.

The LGF has over a decade’s experience in assessing and meeting the changing needs of LGB&T communities and doing this using a range of organisational and governance structures. The LGF is increasingly supporting the work of other LGB&T groups.

On this particular goal the LGF works in partnership with, and on behalf of trans organisations and groups.

Our core activities supporting this goal are:

Capacity building which involves the provision of a practical package of support to LGB&T groups; extensive networking with LGB&T groups; providing information and advice on how policies and initiatives will affect LGB&T people; and the establishment of links with community empowerment networks.

Breaking the Cycle which involves the promotion and implementation of the LGF’s LGB&T strategy at local, regional and national levels; helping to build the evidence base for LGB&T communities'' needs; and increasing the capacity of the LGB&T voluntary and community sector to meet these.

Community Development Fund this involves making small grants to LGB&T groups and building up their income base beyond their current primary funders.

Locality based Networks enabling local LGB&T people and groups to increase the adoption of LGB&T issues on the local agenda.  This includes providing an initial platform for community engagement; bringing together key local partners; creating links between LGB&T groups and their local Councils for Voluntary Service; supporting the collation of evidence; and the provision of tailored resources.

The National LGB&T Partnership which involves acting as the lead partner for a coalition of 12 LGB&T organisations across the country who have come together to ensure that LGB&T communities have the opportunity of meaningfully influencing strategy and maximising resources, and ensure that all public sector agencies take account of the needs of LGB&T communities in this country when developing services.

The need

Θ The LGB&T Voluntary and Community Sector, (VCS) is very under resourced, and very small.  Across the whole of England, there are approximately 70 registered LGB charities that have a combined annual income of approximately £12 million.

Θ The LGB&T VCS is as important as other key economic sectors and can assist in the delivery of benefits across the full spectrum of public policy.

Θ The LGB&T VCS can assist in overcoming barriers in access from disadvantaged and marginalised communities, and directly provide services that meet the real needs of specific groups.

Θ The LGB&T VCS is rooted within the geographic communities and communities of need it serves, and makes a valuable connection between public sector organisations and their local communities.

Θ The LGB&T VCS can tackle worklessness and boost economic productivity and also help through volunteering, training and community development activities.

Θ The LGF is committed to reaching out and more meaningfully supporting LGB&T voluntary and community organisations and groups, providing new opportunities to engage in dialogue, harness energy and enthusiasm and share resources.

Θ Independent spaces for participation are scarce for LGB&T communities or prohibitively expensive for voluntary and community organisations with little or no funding.  For many lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people access to a safe, LGB&T specific, community space is of vital importance to them and is often their first and most importantly expressed need when engaging in public sector consultations.

The approach

Θ To lobby for fairer funding, provide access to evidence and provide guidance and support on its best use for LGB &T voluntary and community organisations.

Θ To empower the LGB&T VCS ensuring their voice is heard and provide information to policy and decision makers;  engage with partners and increase awareness of the needs of LGB&T voluntary and community organisations.

Θ To support and equip the LGB&T voluntary and community sector, ensuring the diverse needs of all groups and organisations are communicated and met.

Θ To play a leadership role and share leadership, capacity and opportunities throughout our partnerships and networks.

Θ To widen and deepen LGB&T VCS participation and community engagement, working in a range of geographical localities and forging stronger partnerships.

Θ To build and nurture networks, working with other partner organisations and groups not as competitors for scarce resources, but as allies instead.

Θ To ensure that public authorities do not bypass the LGF or other LGB&T groups when engaging with LGB&T communities and individuals.  “Nothing About Us, Without Us.”

Θ To work in partnership with Trans organisations and groups on the outputs of this Strategic Goal, maximising all opportunities for collaborative and collective working.

The ambition

Over the course of the next five years we will seek investment to:

Θ Facilitate the implementation of the LGF’s Strategy, ‘Breaking the Cycle’ specifically by:

  • Developing the evidence base for LGB&T needs, principally via the LGF’s Evidence Exchange.
  • Increasing knowledge levels & engagement of policy and decision makers across the public sector.
  • Increasing the capacity of LGB&T voluntary and community sector organisations and groups.

Θ Continue to develop closer working relationships and collaborative partnerships with LGB&T VCS organisations and groups.

Θ Increase the potential of networks and networking opportunities, and provide community development support to a wide range of organisations and groups including start-ups.

Θ Disseminate and translate policy initiatives and coordinate the LGB&T VCS involvement in, and responses to, public policy consultations.

Θ Work with existing and new Funders and Commissioners, reaching out to the LGB&T VCS and sharing best practice, in order to provide real and meaningful benefits to the communities served by LGB&T organisations and groups.

Θ Promote awareness of the work of LGB&T organisations via the LGF’s communication channels, and share best practice through the development of How to Guides, and Toolkits.

Θ Share our space and promote a greater use of our facilities with partner LGB&T VCS organisations for the benefit of our communities, and secure longer-term investment for more appropriate premises with greater ranges of facilities.

Θ Host regular visits and debates by influential and inspirational people to a range of audiences and invite community members, decision makers, and partner agencies.

Θ Foster networks and networking opportunities with infrastructure organisations and VCS support agencies to share information and action to support common objectives and increase accessibility.

Θ Develop processes by which LGB&T people and organisations can mobilise swiftly in response to specific opportunities or threats to our communities.
