You might think that being gay or lesbian and wanting to be a parent is something new - or maybe the idea is simply new to you? Same sex parents have been out there for some time and in most cases managing fantastically well to bring up fantastic kids.
There has never been a law preventing lesbian, gay or bisexual individuals from adopting children, however there have been laws introduced recently to make it easier and now there are many other ways lesbian and gay people can have children.
Featured in this guide are some of the options open to lesbian, gay and bisexual people who are thinking of starting a family. First published in 2008, 'We are Family' is The Lesbian & Gay Foundation’s first booklet to talk specifically about LGB parenting.

One thing we have found in researching and producing this booklet is that there is a major need for more support for LGB parents simply to share information with and to know that there are other lesbian and gay parents out there.
We hope you find this resource useful and acknowledge that since publication there has been some progress to the law around The Human Fertilisation & Embryology Act which provides equal legal recognition for the children of same-sex parents and removes existing barriers to lesbians accessing safe, regulated fertility treatment.
