Befrienders

Sometimes we can have all the will in the world to get up and try new things and meet different people, but it’s often our confidence that holds us back…

Feeling lonely, having mental health issues, being new to the area, coming out of a relationship, or just coming out, can all be challenging barriers to being the person you want to be and achieving your goals – this is where the Befriending service comes in.

‘The service is a real help in a very difficult area of a person’s private life.  I wasn’t sure how my story would be received, but I was delighted to find that I was accepted in the most non-judgemental was which gave me all the confidence I needed to take the first step towards my new life.  Thank you for offering the service.’

We can offer up to 10 sessions with a volunteer befriender, who can support you and guide you through difficult times.

The Befriending service is aimed at those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or questioning over the age of 50, and who live in the Greater Manchester area, although we do welcome referrals from those aged 25 and over.

Whether it’s just meeting up for a brew and a chat, attending a group together, or encouraging you to go it alone, our befrienders can help you to be the person you want to be, and challenge those negative thoughts we all have from time to time.

'Could I just take this opportunity to say thank you for this service I have benefited tremendously and my whole outlook on life as improved so much. I now hope to start volunteering myself and I hope to further in other volunteering roles in the future. It has been a brilliant service for me and really helped to gain control over my own life. Once again thank you so much.'

Usually the befrienders sessions happen around Manchester City Centre, but, if you live in Greater Manchester, it’s a possibility your befriender will be able to travel to you too, so you can receive support in your own community.

We’ll refund your travel expenses and provide money for activities as well, whether that’s for theatre tickets, entry to a group, or just for a cup of tea and a slice of cake!

If you would like to apply for this service, or have any questions, please email kate.hardy@lgf.org.uk or phone 0845 3 30 30 30.  You will be contacted shortly after and invited to come in for a chat.
