Enough is Enough
Our guide to hate crime and what to if you're a victim or a witness.
This credit-card sized booklet was produced specifically in response to the escalation in homophobic hate crimes and incidents across the UK in late 2009 which have been reported to the police, highlighting that homophobia is still very much part of our society.
According to The Gay British Crime Survey, (Stonewall 2008):
Around one in five lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people have been a victim of homophobic hate crime in the last 3 years. 75% of these were not reported to the police.
Why report Homophobic hate?
The only way to tackle homophobic hate is to report every incident. Left unreported, these incidents can lead to further attacks on an individual which can lead to serious hate crimes against members of the LGB&T communities.
What are the police going to do?
We all want an immediate response - to know that we are being listened to - and when we don’t get this, we sometimes think “what’s the point?”
The point is this: every time you report homophobia, you are telling the police that it is a problem that they need to be aware of and respond to every day.
What can we do about it?
- Prioritise our own personal safety.
- Report all incidents of a homophobic nature.
- Adopt a high profile zero tolerance approach – hate crime against LGB&T people needs to be seen as unacceptable.
- Transphobic crime is recorded separately and should be monitored as such. Make sure you know your local hate crime reporting numbers and third party reporting venues.
- Seek advice on what to expect when reporting an incident.
Personal Safety Tips - How can you help to make sure you aren't a target? What do you do if you are a victim or a witness of a hate crime?
Getting further support - The effects of experiencing or witnessing hate don't just stop once you've reported it. It can have a profound effect on your life for varying periods of time.
This guide explains the difference between a homophobic hate incident and a hate crime as well as providing useful reporting numbers and contact details, lists the number of reported incidents and crimes throughout the last year across the North West of England.
Homophobia can be anything from verbal or physical abuse or damage to property. Homophobia is a crime. If you haven't reported it yet or taken any action we can help you - even if you just want to tell us more about your experience.
Do not tolerate Homophobic Hate. Enough is Enough!
