Gay American Poet Celebrated in Radio 4 Documentary

Stuart Maconie host a celebration of the work of the Walt Whitman

BBC Radio 4The idea for the programme 'Walking with Whitman' came from co-producer Andrew Edwards who also presents BBC Radio Manchester's 'Gay Hour' with Ashley Byrne.

Andrew says: 'The name Walt Whitman usually encourages thoughts of poetry, comradeship, equality - and America. But few people know about the long association he had with the northern English mill town of Bolton!

Walt Whitman'In Walking with Whitman, Stuart Maconie heads to the Lancashire Moors to join Whitman fans who travel from all over the world every year on his birthday to recite and celebrate his unique work.'

Produced by Made in Manchester, who also produced BBC Radio 2's 'How AIDs Changed America", 'Walking with Whitman' will include readings of some of his most famous works. Made in Manchester's Creative Director Ashley Byrne says: 'We were delighted to secure Stuart Maconie for this programme. He was a perfect host because he loves poetry and the great outdoors.

Walking with Whitman will air on BBC Radio 4 at 4.30pm on Sunday 5th July.
