Civil Partnerships and the workplace
Laws have been, and continue to be changed, to make it clear that civil partners have to be treated the same as spouses. Remember that all employees are entitled to take a reasonable amount of time off work, albeit unpaid, to deal with emergencies or unexpected situations involving a dependant. Where the law can benefit you at work includes:
- health packages
- travel or leisure passes
- relocation agreements
- accommodation
- time off for dependants
Not "out" at work?
There is a clear distinction between telling who you need to tell at work and telling everyone. If your manager outs you without your permission, this could lead to unlawful harassment. If these rights are refused, you can go through a formal grievance procedure. It is in these situations where it is wise to join a union.
