outnorthwest issue 111

Welcome to this special Manchester Pride edition of ONW.  This year saw the 40th anniversary of the UK’s first ever Pride event, which took place in London in 1972.

Manchester’s first Pride was over 20 years ago and today events across the North West demonstrate how important Pride is to all of us, wherever we are.  Pride is hugely important whether we acknowledge it or not. It’s the one time of the year when the entire queer community can come out in all of our glory and be whoever, or whatever we have always wanted to be.

We may think that Pride events aren’t as important to us personally as they once were, but sometimes we forget that thousands of people are experiencing one of the most life- affirming experiences of their lives.

At this time of year it’s important to recognise how far we’ve come as a community and as a society, but if we ever forget the importance of these events we will soon begin to notice that we’ve lost an important way in which to express ourselves - and most importantly to meet others who feel just like we do.Together we are stronger, and to all those who are organising or attending Pride events this Summer I salute you. And just like Manchester Pride, long may you reign.

We’ll be back at the end of September.

Thank you again for your continued support of outnorthwest and The Lesbian & Gay Foundation.
