Our counselling services

There are five different types of counselling offered by LGF’s Therapeutic Services Team.

Client Centred/Person Centred Counselling

This type of counselling is not goal orientated and is led by the client, who can talk about anything they wish to. The Counsellor uses the relationship with the client as a means of healing and change. This is based on the principle that the counsellor provides : Empathy (the ability to imagine yourself (i.e: the counsellor) in another’s position); Unconditional positive regard (a non-judgemental support approach); Congruence (honesty, openness)

Transactional Analysis

Counselling which emphasisies people’s personal responsibility for their feelings, thoughts and behaviour. It believes people can change, if they actively decide to replace their usual patterns of behaviour with new ones. The counsellor offers: ‘Permission’ for new ways of thinking about yourself ,and the world; ‘Protection’ when changing behaviour and when thoughts feel risky; ‘Potency’ to be able to deliver what you promise to yourself or the Counsellor.

Cognitive Analytic Therapy

This type of therapy aims to link the problems someone faces now with their earlier life experiences. This is used to help them arrive at a clearer understanding of unmanageable feelings and how these play a role in maintaining present difficulties. It is a flexible approach with an emphasis on collaborative work between therapist (or counsellor) and client. It involves 16 separate sessions and uses active methods such as diary keeping and letter writing.

Brief Therapy

Brief therapy focuses on the client and therapist working together to identify the problem and determine objectives and goals to resolve the problem. Brief therapy is based on short, specific and measurable goals, which places an emphasis on the present and future, and not on the past. Sessions last for 12 weeks and are particularly good for issues such as raising self-esteem and confidence building.

NLP Therapy(Neuro Linguistic Programming)

NLP therapy is a short term, goal orientated and practical approach to solving problems and achieving goals. It is based on the idea that we all have the resources to make positive life changes and with the help of NLP techniques (a tool to facilitate change), new patterns of behaviour can be established. The techniques learned can be useful in many other situations.
