Hate crime against LGB&T people is all too common

In recent months we have become increasingly aware of the number of homophobic hate crimes reported to the police, highlighting that homophobia is still very much part of UK society.

Around one in five lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people have been a victim of homophobic hate crime in the last 3 years. 75% of these were not reported to the police. *

The painful truth

  • 1 in 5 lesbian and gay people have experienced a homophobic hate crime or incident in the last three years.
  • 1 in 6 lesbian and gay people have been insulted and harassed in the last three years because they are gay.
  • 1 in 10 lesbian and gay people say that being a victim of crime is their biggest worry.
  • Over 1 in 10 lesbian and gay people think that there is a ‘big problem’ of homophobic hate crimes and incidents in their local area.

Transphobia

  • 72% of trans people have experienced some kind of harassment in a public place
  • 21% of trans people reported not going out because of previous harassment in public
