Syphilis Transmission
Syphilis used to be rarely seen by professionals working within sexual health clinics. However, since 1999, Manchester has seen a significant increase in the number of cases reported, especially in MSM.
Syphilis can be picked up through:
• Having unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex,
• Through genital contact,
• Contact with syphilitic sores, rashes, lesions,
• Blood-to-blood contact.
How to avoid it
Avoiding Syphilis altogether is quite difficult, unless you stop having sex completely. However, if you use condoms and dental dams for oral sex and rimming, and condoms with loads of water-based lube for anal or vaginal sex, you might be able to stop the infection from being passed on.
We understand that using condoms for oral sex is not the same as not. However, condoms are the most effective way of preventing the transmission of Syphilis through oral sex, and there are a number of flavoured condoms produced by Durex including:
• Banana
• orange
• Strawberry
• Kiwi
