Homophobic pansies short-listed in art awards

Paul Harfleet, the artist who created The Pansy Project as a living memorial to places where homophobia has been experienced, has been shortlisted in the art category of the Best of Manchester awards, which spotlights the work of Manchester's creative professionals.

The Pansy ProjectSince 2005 Paul has travelled to various locations in the UK, Europe and the US to plant self - seeding pansies which act as an antidote to homophobic abuse, wherever it has taken place, each Pansy's location is named after the abuse received.

Last year's inaugural Best of Manchester Awards celebrated the kind of cutting-edge creativity for which Manchester has long been renowned and this years winners will be announced at a special ceremony today (7th August) at URBIS - the exhibition centre which offers unique insights into the modern culture of city life.

Paul will be showing a small selection of photographs of where he has planted the flowers at URBIS from 8 August until 28 September.
