HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 27th January 2013

Publish Date: 21/01/2013

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2013 is 'Communities together: Build a Bridge'.

The LGB&T community has long had to build it’s own communities to protect itself from persecution and Holocaust Memorial Day reminds us that there is still much to do to ensure that we build on the work done in the past and continue to work towards a better future for future  for generations of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people in our societies.

People who had been persecuted by the Nazis for being L, G, B or T had little choice: either to bury their experience and pretend it never happened or to try to campaign for recognition in an environment that did not acknowledge their right to exist.

Of course in many countries today the situation for many LGB&T people has improved but there are still many atrocities facing the LGB&T community from homophobia and hate crime at home to the silencing of individuals and organisations in Russia to the fear of imprisonment, punishment and even death of those in countries like Uganda.

Sadly there are very few known victims of Nazi homophobia alive today but we owe it to all of them to continue to challenge homophobia wherever it appears, in any way that we can.

Life for some of us may be better today but we can and should remember those that have gone before us.

This year HMD Trust are asking all of us to  take inspiration from the past, celebrate difference and ensure respect for all.

The Lesbian & Gay Foundation want more people to be active in their community. Often the issues that directly affect us may go unheard or un-addressed, unless there is an active voice around the table that is championing the needs of our community.
