The Pride Parade

Published: 24/08/07

On Saturday 25th August the streets of Manchester city centre will be filled with nearly 80 parade entries and thousands of people, all coming together for an explosion of colour, campness and music to celebrate Manchester’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender life.

From 2pm until 4pm the city will once again transform into a spectacular and fabulous show with a marvelous parade featuring a host of debut entries. The parade will begin on Deansgate from Liverpool Road and weave its way through the city streets until finally making its way down to the village, turning left at Whitworth Street and finishing at Aytoun Street.

Organisers say that they are expecting a whole host of companies and community groups from across the North West to enter the parade with a mixture of floats, cars, buses and walking entries to contribute to the festivities for another record breaking year.

One entry, The SARP Project, will enter a Bollywood themed float. The display will be a celebration of Asian and queer culture and up to 50 dancers in traditional Asian dress will perform on the float while a DJ spins Bollywood tunes.

HIV fundraising group Mission Malawi will also submit a float to raise awareness for their latest expedition to raise money for the AIDS-ravaged people of Malawi.

Greater Manchester Fire Service, Greater Manchester Police and NHS will also be sending floats, as will a number of community groups such as the Manchester Parents Group and Manbears.

Jackie Crozier, festival manager of Manchester Pride, said: “I’m sure the emergency services will be a big hit with the crowds. Firemen in uniform are always going to attract attention, but personally, I’m looking forward to seeing some of the female firefighters!”
