See Stonewall for free at the LGF on Thursday, 22nd May
Stonewall, the 1995 drama and comedy which covers the series of events in the build up to the opening battle in the major gay rights movement of Stonewall will be the next film to be screened by the Lesbian and Gay Foundation to mark International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO).
The free screening will take place on Thursday 22 May from 7pm at the LGF headquarters in Princess House, 105-107 Princess Street, which is just a stones throw from Manchester’s gay village.
The film follows a group of drag queens and shows how after a long history of police raids, extortion, and brutality, the group based in Stonewall Inn decide they have had enough and begin to riot when the police try to load them into a paddy wagon.
Told by "La Miranda" (Hector), a regular customer at the Inn, the film is a recounting of events that led up to that fateful day in 1969.
A spokeswoman for the Lesbian and Gay Foundation commented: “To mark International Day Against Homophobia which takes place on the 17 May we really wanted to show a film which highlights exactly how far we have come since the days when homosexuality was illegal and homophobia was strife in the UK.
“We think that the film Stonewall does just that but also shows just how far we still have to go to achieve full equality.”
Places for the film are limited so please book yours in advance through jeni@lgf.org.uk or call 0161 235 8006. The film is free but a suggested donation of £1 per person is welcome on the door.
