'Hysteria' on show at Victoria Baths
Published: 16/06/08
Contact & Grupo XIX De Teatro (Brazil) are presenting a new show next week in a truly atmospheric locale – Manchester’s Victoria Baths.
Hysteria follows five Brazilian dames who were wrongly imprisoned in the Pedro II Mental Institute, Rio De Janeiro, between the 19th and 20th centuries. These feisty femmes will bring the audience up-close-and-personal with misconceived female “hysteria” and make us think about contemporary attitudes to gender and sexuality.
Hysteria is presented by Brazilian site-specific theatre company, Grupo XIX. They always work with distinctive locations and construct each performance in response to their setting and audience. This is a unique theatrical experience tailored to the surroundings of Manchester’s Victoria Baths - a listed Edwardian swimming pool and Turkish Baths complex - the only chance to see the show outside London.
Expect to witness the suffocated lust, flashes of vivacity and fragmented memories of those wrongly incarcerated.
To book tickets please call Contact on 0161 274 0600 or online via www.contact-theatre.org - Tickets are £10 (£6 concessions).
Hysteria takes place from Thu 19 – Sat 21 June, 7.30pm at Victoria Baths, Hathersage Road, near Longsight, Manchester M13 0FE. <map>
