‘A Way with the Fairies’ for Oldham Pride
Published: 23/06/08
Oldham will be reaching for the skies on Saturday 26th July from 12noon to 4pm when Oldham Pride 08 takes place in the Town Centre and Gallery Oldham.
Organised by Oldham LGBT Forum this year’s Pride event has an engaging ‘Flights of Fancy - A Way with the Fairies’ theme. With birds of paradise, plane crews and ‘fairy’ stories as just a few ideas there’s plenty of scope for imaginative and creative input and involvement from everyone. As well as celebrating the local LGBT community and diversity in the town, the town will be continuing it’s pioneering Kicking Homophobia Out of Oldham campaign.
Pride Parade
The day starts at 12noon when Civic leaders officially start the Flights of Fancy Pride Parade starting in Oldham Town Centre. Following last year’s inaugural parade, this year’s procession promises to be even more vibrant, colourful and noisy.
Led by the fantastically animated Pink Carnival Owl, the Parade will weave its way down High Street and Greaves Street before reaching Gallery Oldham.
Vampires, Bluebirds, Fairies et al
Entertainment, live music and activities take place in and around Gallery Oldham from 12.30pm to 4pm all lovingly steered by the fabulous Jonathan Mayor and vampire queen Rosie Lugosi.Live music from GeEkgiRL, Claire Mooney, Performance Plaza and Cavali, with more acts to be revealed.
This year Urban Moves International Dance Festival will present the stunning outdoor show Bluebird. Australian performer Liz Lea mixes everything from baroque to breakdown in an amazing piece of music and movement all in a spectacularly huge blue dress. The day will also feature plenty of ‘Fairy Ground’ activities with make-and-do activities and circus skills, as well as information stalls from a range of supporting organisations and sporting demonstrations.
LGBT Archive and Oldham’s Big Brother
There will also be an opportunity for members of Oldham’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans communities to tell their stories by signing up to the Oldham LGBT archive project being launched at Oldham Pride. The Youth Service is working closely with young people in Oldham and will be presenting their ‘Big Brother’ play, challenging the negative use of the word ‘gay’.
