Befrienders Scheme
Moving to a new city and starting all over again can be a daunting and difficult experience, as can coming out to family and friends for the first time.
If you have been feeling isolated, or want to get involved in new activities but don't know how to go about it or don't feel confident going along without a friendly face then you may be interested in the befriending service offered by The Lesbian & Gay Foundation, and open to all members of the LGBT community over the age of 25.
Lucy Rolfe, The LGF's Wellbeing Co-ordinator explains some of the possible benefits of befriending:
"Isolation is a problem we support people with every day through our other services, but never before have we had a project dedicated to this problem alone.
"Recent reports show that loneliness is a growing problem, particularly for people who identify as LGB or T, and is linked to poor mental and physical health, as well as low confidence and self esteem.
"There are loads of things out there people can get involved in, but going along to a class or group for the first time can be a really intimidating experience.
"Having a friendly face there with you can make a world of difference until you're ready to go it alone."
If you have ever found yourself feeling isolated, lonely or maybe just needing someone to come along with you to a new support group or a class you have always wanted to try, this service is for you.
The befriending scheme offers up to ten sessions with a LGF volunteer, providing an opportunity to get out into the community and meet new people whilst being supported by your befriender. Whether you just want to meet up for a chat and a coffee, or maybe go out to an art gallery, the cinema or a sports group, the befriending scheme can support you in getting more involved in the community, meeting new people and building your confidence. Financial help will be given towards travel expenses and the cost of the activities will be covered.
So far the befriending scheme has been under way for about three months, and it has already helped loads of people get involved in new activities and meet new friends. A service user explains how he benefited from the scheme:
"Manchester city offers an interesting collection of sights, atmospheres and flavors, but life can be a bit solitary for the newcomer. When I first arrived here, with no friends or family in the country, I felt comforted when I read about a befriending program at the LGF; one that was really easy to access - it just took one email - , and that would give me the opportunity of getting to know the city, the culture and, of course, a wonderful person to call my friend.
"My friend helped me a lot to feel happy and easy about being a sexual minority. For the first time I had the opportunity to talk freely about my problems, doubts and questions while having a nice drink with somebody that would understand and listen to me with tolerance and patience - and with no extra-charge!-.
"I highly recommend the Befriending Program, especially when considering that this is a city full of "newbies " like myself , away from home who need a little initial thrust to start life at Manchester .'
