Sugar & Spice
Women from all over the UK came together to celebrate International Women’s Day at the Lesbian and Gay Foundation’s second annual Sugar and Spice event in March carrying the theme of 'Women Seen and Heard' - in your personal and professional relationships; in your community and in your society.
The event held on March 1 2008 at the LGF headquarters in Manchester proved a success and brought more than 75 women together for a day of learning, experience sharing and debates.
Nine workshops were held at the event and covered a range of topics from the positive and negative aspects of being a lesbian, the portrayal of gay women in the media, visibility of women, together with a problem and experience sharing session covering everything from relationships, sexuality, work, community and family.
The day provided an opportunity for women of all backgrounds, ages and interests to come together to share, learn, explore, network and build friendships and partnerships while celebrating International Women’s Day.
Sugar and Spice Organiser Annie Emery commented: “The day went very well and gave women the opportunity to really discuss lesbian issues, share good practice and meet new people.
“The workshops provided women with a platform to discuss their lesbian and bisexual experiences in order to drive forward an agenda for women in consultation with the community.”
“Sugar and Spice is quickly becoming an opportunity for women to speak up, challenge others, discuss their problems and also tell us, the Lesbian and Gay Foundation about their ever-changing lesbian and bisexual needs. Watch this space for Sugar and Spice 2009!”
Other highlights of the event included complimentary therapies including massages and reiki, a question and answer session and a cocktail party at Vanilla bar in Manchester’s gay village.
