Brotherhood of Man
Brotherhood of Man - Save Your Kisses For Me (1976)
Brotherhood of Man was the group often compared to Abba in the seventies because of it’s 2 boy, 2 girl line up when they were the UK’s second winners of the contest in the mid seventies. Nicky Stevens, Sandra Stevens, Martin Lee and Lee Sheriden broke the voting record for Eurovision and sold well over five million copies of "Save Your Kisses for Me", which is the biggest selling Eurovision winning single in the competition's history.
Lee Sheridan of the group told outnorthwest:
The most outstanding memory is the joy of winning something for your country which is still with us today. It’s great to win something but to win for your country brings a pride that lasts forever.
Tempted to make a comeback in Eurovision in 1992, Sandra Stevens said that Brotherhood of Man had been shortlisted to sing in A Song for Europe 1983. However she said that the group changed its mind, preferring to be remembered for winning the Eurovision Song Contest as opposed to possibly losing a UK qualifying heat.
Lee who was also the co writer of their winning song back in 76 has the answer to the question ‘What can UK do to win the competition again? ‘
“The answer might seem simple but it is true: we need an outstanding song sung by an outstanding singer or band. Some of our recent entries have been very good but we need to just blow all opposition away.”
As the Brotherhood aren’t likely to be entering the competition again in the near future what are they doing now?
“We are touring with our own theatre show “The 70s Story” and in concert with Bucks Fizz throughout this year and we are still all four “Save your kisses” original members!
