Bucks Fizz - Making Your Mind Up (1981)
Cheryl Baker first represented the UK at Eurovision in 1978 as a member of the group Co-Co with the song “The Bad Old Days” which came in at a disappointing (for then) 11th place.
However in 1981 as part of the relatively unknown band Bucks Fizz Cheryl won the contest with a song called Making Your Mind Up and a skirt-ripping dance routine which has inspired countless entries ever since. Mike Nolan, Cheryl Baker, Bobby G and Jay Aston (and subsequently Shelley Preston) went on to have three No1s and 11 top 20 hits.
“My outstanding lasting memory of taking part in Eurovision was standing on a table surrounded by a sea of photographers - that was when I realised that what we had done was big! “ remembers Cheryl.
What does Cheryl think of the competition now?
“I believe the competition needs to be split into 3 preliminaries:
Southern Europe, Northern Europe, Eastern Europe - with the top five winners of each of the preliminaries going forward to the final.
Apart from PA's around the country, Cheryl will be taking part in Seussical - the musical, this summer and “I will be ripping my skirt off with Shelley and Mike at various gigs, working as The Original Bucks Fizz (for legal reasons!). “
