Just another crazy, cat-loving lesbian

Friends of mine who have children are very proud of that fact, and so they should be. They always seem to be the main topic of conversation amongst parents. I do not have any children so can at times feel somewhat left out of the loop‚ when conversation turns towards the traits expressed by certain little darlings!

However, what I do have are my cats, whom I affectionately refer to as ‘my boys’. I can sense that some of you reading this will be thinking that I am in fact just another crazy cat loving lesbian.

Growing up I was always preferred dogs, although this was probably due to the fact that my parents preferred them-and also because they caught rabbits for fun, so the prospect of having a cat around the house could have proved fatal. It was not until I moved out from my parents and had a sneaky mouse living on the sly in my flat that I decided to get a cat. Although to be honest this was also around the same time that I came out, so maybe subconsciously wanting a cat was just part of becoming a lesbian. Come to think of it I think I also purchased a few pot plants in the same month!

Whatever the underlying reason behind the purchase of my first born‚ I am glad that I am now a cat person. It is not just us lesbians that share a love of cats; I have many gay men and straight friends who feel the same. I have even been at party’s and found myself chatting outside to a whole host of people about cats.

As far as stereotypes go, being labelled as a cat lover must be one of the preferred ones. Looking back over the years, and even today there are gay stereotypes which can cut you deep emotionally. If only everyone who feels the need to shout in the street at lesbians only used “hey you cat lover”, well the world would be a better place. Pets, whatever they are - cats, dogs or hamsters - can always guarantee you two things; unconditional love and that they will not judge you on your sexuality.

If only human beings were like that!
