Activists come together to parody anti gay marriage ad.

By Joanne Dunning

Last week we reported that the right wing American group the National Organisation for Marriage (NOM) had reportedly spent $1.5 million dollars on producing a very slick, very cynical and very wrong anti gay marriage advert.

Reddit.com are Homo Heroes! The appalling advert has incensed many, but a group of ad hoc activists on the the social networking site Reddit, decided to get even with NOM. Disgusted by the lies that NOM were peddling, they took it upon themselves to re-record the voiceover to the advert and change NOMs logo and banner to "People Against Equality".

The voiceover uses much of the original ad's dialogue but changes any references to same sex marriage, to comments about inter racial marriage and racial equality. Far from being racist, the activists are merely highlighting how unacceptable it would be for someone to make an advert so overtly racist, let alone get it broadcast on American TV, as NOM have done with their homophobic anti same sex marriage ad.

This spontaneous activism is especially refreshing considering that many of the reddit users involved won't necessarily be lesbian, gay or bisexual as it isn't a dedicated LGBT site.

So The Lesbian and Gay Foundation give the reddit users behind the parody a hearty high redditfive for being "Homo Heroes" and challenging the homophobic National Organisation for Marriage, who most definitely win the accolade of "Homo Zeros"!

  • On behalf of everyone involved with creating this video, thank you for the privilege of the title "Homo Heros" and the recognition of our work! The video was assembled without any of the collaborators ever meeting face to face. Users recorded their voices on their computers and emailed them to me for assembly into the final product.

A few hours after the video was posted, some other users of reddit registered the domain http://www.people-against-equality.org (the fake site from our video). That website now displays a parody of the NOM website and contains links to organizations like the Human Rights Campaign and the American Civil Liberties Union. The website is a work in progress and we are open to suggestions for content and additional links.
