Dr David Wilkinson, University of Reading
In this talk he takes a fresh look at the sexual dissidence and gender-bending of early British punk and its relationship to the gay scene. He considers gay and bisexual punk figures such as Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks and music journalist Jane Suck and ponder the different attitudes to gender and sexuality which various subgenres of punk went on to adopt. He also traces the influence of punk’s shake-up of sexuality and gender on the music of the early 80s, as well as reflecting on its complicated but often inspiring political legacy.
The talk will be accompanied by a choice selection of images and music.
